DEATHNOTE - Episode 1 - REBIRTH

OPENING: ?THE WORLD? - Nightmare

From the creator of the Deathnote manga series by Tsugumi Ohba, takes big stage on TV in it’s animation presented by Madhouse Studios. If you’re a fan of Haruhi Suzumiya style in graphic animation (color) then you definitely want to see this!

Summary:
The series started out in a place far beyond ordinary people to see. It was a life less place and barren place where shinigamis (death gods) live. Ryuuku a bored-out shinigami was invited to play with the other shinigamis but it seems that he turned down the favor.

Somewhere in Japan, Yagami Light an ordinary student in a university was asked to translate a verse from his teacher. After seeing the bad news on a large TV, he said to himself that everyday was the same, and that the world is rotten. Even Ryuuku thought the same. It seems that Light too was the same as Ryuuku; they both were bored with their lives.

The next day, Light was looking outside the window while ignoring his teacher and his classmates talking when suddenly a notebook falling from the sky appeared and got his attention towards it. After class, he was going towards the direction where the notebook landed. Hi picked it up, and read “DEATHNOTE”. “A notebook of death?” Light asked to himself. He gave it a smirk and turned to the first page where instructions where written:

“The human whose name is written in this notebook shall die”.

He immediately closed the notebook and thought it was ridiculous, he place it back to the ground; thinking that it was just as worse as a bunch of chain-mails or was it?

In the end he decided to pick it anyway and stored it in his bag. Upon arriving at his own room, he read the rest of the rules, he was still at his thinking state whether to believe it or not. But he was curious on what would happen, so he got pen from his bed and got a pen from his desk. Since Light was an ace student, he would think cautiously on what he will do. The first thing that went into his mind is that “If  a person actually dies, would it mean I would be a killer?” but since he didn’t knew that the notebook was really true, he simply take it as a bluff.  So he decided to perform a test-drive to see if it works. The first thing he did was turn on the TV, luckily there was a hostage incident that happened live in Shinjuku. The broadcaster then announced names on the suspect on public. Light then wrote down his name on the notebook “Kurou Otorahada”. 45 seconds pass, it seems that nothing has happened from where the scene took off. Light was about to turn off the TV but it looks like something did happened. The hostages were freed; they were all ok. The police were going inside the building but the suspect was already dead. The police didn’t shot the suspect, nor did they hurt him. What’s the cause? Heart attack. Light still regards the incident as a coincidence. He was interrupted by his mother’s voice, calling him to go down stairs to prepare for his next subject for class. After packing the rest of his stuff, he decided to test it one more time (just to really make sure). He would like to try out a particular person, not a person who is close to him so that the police won’t know his actions. While strolling along the road, he saw a woman being harassed by gangsters. The groups leader stupidly revealed his name to the girl and was heard by Light. Light was inside a bookshop, where he put the Deathnote on top of another book so that nobody can see what he is doing. He wrote the name “Shibuimaro Takuo” and the cause of death “Traffic accident”. The woman was running for her life, Shibuimaro tried to chase her but he was accidentally hit by a large truck. Light was amazed of what he saw, and proved that the Deathnote really is real.

Ryuuku’s journey, finally started. After waiting for five days doing nothing, he wanted to go to the human world to see what happens. But before he could go to the human world, his friends asked him why does he want to go there, he gave them a lame excuse “I dropped my notebook in the human world”. He was teased by his fellow shinigamis but he didn’t care. He used a portal which lead him to the human world and used his wings to go where his Deathnote can be found; at Light’s place.

Light was greeted with a bright face from his mother. His mother seems fund of his high scores in school, he always place first in their class. He went upstairs and opened his drawer where the notebook is found, he already put up lot’s of names of criminals both notorious and small ones. And to think he can do that in just five days? Wow, he really did put effort in it. Light was staring at his notebook, quite happy. He was freaked out when Ryuuku just appeared out of nowhere. Looking at Ryuuku’s face is so scary, Ryuuku then introduced himself to Light. Light told Ryuuku that he was not surprised too see him but rather expects him to come. Ryuuku however was surprised to what Light said, he stated that several death notes had already reached to earth countless times, but he never saw anyone wrote many names in just 5 days. Light thought that after using the notebook, a shinigami would take out his soul. Ryuuku said to him that if a Deathnote landed on the human world and a human tends to pick the notebook then it will be owned by that human itself. If Light will give the notebook to somebody else, then his memories regarding the notebook shall be gone. The price for using the notebook however, is that the owner’s soul shall not go to heave nor to hell. When the time comes for your own death, only Ryuuku can put Light’s name into his notebook.

Light’s mother then appeared bringing with her a basket full of apples for him to eat. He was amazed when his mother didn’t saw Ryuuku. After closing the door, Ryuuku clarified to Light that only the user of his notebook can see him and hear him. He took out an apple from the basket, and decided to take a bite.  Ryuuk said it was delicious and got hooked and started to gobble more apples. And here comes Light’s question “Then why do you choose me?” Ryuuku told him that he was not chosen by him just because he is special, but he manage to drop it then Light happened to pick it up. That’s why he wrote the instructions in English because it was popular and almost all of the world knows how to read/write this. Light asked another question regarding Ryuuku on why he drop the notebook. Ryuuku replied “Because I was bored”. Ryuuku further explained what’s going on in their world, Shinigami nowadays don’t do much, they usually gamble or preferred to take a nap and if they spotted you writing down a name of a human being they ended up laughing at you. After clarifying more details, Ryuuku asked another question to Light on why he wrote many names of criminals. For Light, he only wanted to create a utopia without any evil but only good people shall remain and he did it so that everyone will notice that somebody is passing righteous judgment. Light eventually answered another question from Ryuuku and said that he was also bored with his life. Eventually a flashback scene regarding on the traffic accident was revealed. Light struggled to surpass his feelings after killing two people, he made it a question to himself if he is really a murderer. No, he did it because the world is rotten and those who are rotten should die.

Insight:
Ok, so the blog entry for the original review for Deathnote was deleted. We pretty don’t know much what happened (stupid wordpress!!). Sakura and me re-wrote the entry all over again, sorry for the delay people!.

Episode 1 closely resembles early chapters from the original manga but with few minor changes. For example, Ryuuku got the apple from the refrigerator of Light’s house. In the anime however, Light’s mom gave apples for him and was gobbled by Ryuuku. I personally think that the voice actor of Light was not meant to be. Light’s voice actor was the same voice actor of Tamaki from Ouran Host Club; I prefer Light’s voice much manlier. The anime expresses a lot of drama than the manga; just look at how Light uses his pen in writing down names. OMG! I preferred Ryuuku from the manga than the anime. ^_^. Thanks to Toriyama’s world and Saiyan island for the episodes.

KTHNXBAI!!!,
