OPENING: 「Innocent Sorrow」 - Abingdon Boys High
First impressions are a must aren’t they? D. Gray Man is one of the popular manga that can be read weekly at Weekly Shonen Jump Magazines, we decided to make a review since it’s one of our watch list. Episode 1- "The boy who hunts akuma"
The episode started with an introduction of the exorcist. Exorcists were chosen by god in order to hunt evil living in darkness. They exist in exterminating AKUMA.
*Note: Akuma is a Japanese term for demon, the author expresses this in English*Allen Walker, a young exorcist had just arrived from the steam train station. It was already dark, the scene was zoomed in at London. Allen was riding a caravan with people, he called out Timcanpy. Timcanpy was his pet, it looked the snitch (the one that you see in Harry Potter) and it flies too. He even told Timcanpy to watch out for the cats. A clown and a woman with a bunny outfit appeared from behind Allen and offered him food. The woman asked if he’s on a trip. He said he was going to visit the Exorcists Headquarters.

Meanwhile on the other side of London, people were whispering rumors about a certain place. The building was regarded as a haunted place, many travelers were gone and only there belongings were left behind and the only cause of the phenomena was an incident 2 years ago. Moore, a young police lady wanted to investigate if the rumors were true, while his sidekick Charles was quivering with fear and wanted to stay behind but ended up going inside the dreaded building with her. Moore opened the doors of the building and stepped inside. Charles was describing how the place really is scary. He screamed when suddenly there was something on his leg. It was a cat after all. But suddenly a screech was heard over the place and bats came flying through out of the dark and made Charles scream even louder. While Charles was catching his breath when he landed to the opposite side and asked his partner if she was ok. Something or someone suddenly pushed Moore and pinned her on a chair. When the suspect saw it was a human, he immediately asked why she was there. But she immediately handcuffed the suspect on his left arm. She was so pissed on why she was treated that way. The suspect tried to convince her that he was sorry because he only tried to catch the cat that was on Moore’s arms but was caught up cause he didn’t notice Moore was there. A ray of the moon’s light shine through the window and shown the suspect’s face. It was Allen Walker. That night Moore tried to explain that the building had disturbing rumors. Allen told Moore that he just arrived from London, and the cat snatched something important from him and he wanted it back and that’s why he ended up in the building trying to catch the cat. Moore gave him a questioning face. He tried to convince her more by telling that the important thing belonged from his Master. Moore then asked on regarding where his master now. Allen replied that his master disappeared somewhere in India (poor kid). Allen blamed the cat for the trouble and surprisingly the cat returned that thought into a grin that marked its face.

Their conversation was cut-off when suddenly Charles scream was heard. Moore asked Allen to stay behind. She quickly opened another door that lead to the staircases which led to Charles location. There she saw the gruesome thing that happened to his partner; Charles was tied on a column screaming. His face was covered with star marks and within that few seconds his body exploded leaving only his clothes. Moore was shocked on what happened to the abomination of his partner. Moore then felt that she can’t breath; Allen then came into the scene and covered her mouth and nose, and told her that the toxic in the gas was really dangerous. Allen pointed out to Moore that his partner was killed by an Akuma, but all of a sudden Moore lost her consciousness.

Moore found herself in the police department already awake not long after that, she was dragged by her fellow policeman and knock the door of the head of the division. The fat guy was the head of the division; he kept on asking Allen more questions on what had happened last night. Allen kept on explaining but all the inspector did was to not believe him, besides Allen did have a strange and he was in the incident after all. Moore interrupted their conversation and explained to the chief that Allen was all by himself. Another police confirms this, telling the inspector that a large bullet hole was found in the location and yet Allen only has a cat and a bag with him. The chief inspector scolded Moore for passing out while the investigation was held. The mood changed when Allen explained them that he knew the criminal and the criminal was called an Akuma. Akumas were lethal weapons that wanted to kill and will be unstoppable if they don’t do something about it. Allen told the police that he was part of the extermination of the Akumas. His arm was built as an anti-akuma weapon in order to stop them. The office was quite for a second but the chief immediately told Moore to house arrest Allen and made there expression go WTF?!

After the incident happened police officers, quickly investigated the scene of the crime and that building happens to be a church. People were also gathering in that place, rumors quickly spread about an incident two years ago involving a married couple, while the manufacturer just by-pass them behind grinning. *Note: The manufacturer is the sole maker of an Akuma*.

At Moore’s house, we saw a man exhaling black smoke and the manufacturer arrived and was standing behind the man. The man was an Akuma itself, the manufacturer then disappeared when Moore arrived at his room. That man was Moore’s brother-in-law, but Moore didn’t know what exactly happened. She was talking to her brother about her wife when suddenly Allen fell from the ceiling. It seems like Allen really wanted to go back at the church but he was scolded by Moore. In Moore’s room, she asked Allen if Akumas really are real. She even told him that she doesn’t believe in fictional characters. Allen then further explained to Moore about Akumas: Akuma is the name of a weapon, it’s an evil weapon that targets human beings, and they usually take on human bodies so that they will be hard to notice. Their conversation was stopped when Mark slammed the door open and laugh boisterously. Allen’s eyes turned red when he detected that Mark; Moore’s brother-in-law was an Akuma. The creature evolved and changed it’s appearance into a hideous one. Moore just stared when suddenly the Akuma was about to target her. Good thing Allen was there to protect her. The whole house exploded, Allen and Moore was blown outside. Moore was surprised that Allen caught the bullet on his left hand, she tried to touch it but Allen told her not to because it contains a poisonous virus in it. The victim of it was the poor neko; the cat blew into ashes after it got infected with the virus.

Allen told her that the Akuma killed Mark and took place of his soul. Both of them hid beside the church columns when Allen detected its presence. The chief police appeared at the scene and questioned Allen and Moore but was shocked when he saw the Akuma in front of him, he ordered his men to shoot at the monster but Allen told them it was useless and just run away. It was too late, the policemen and the inspector was all shot by the Akuma itself. Allen protected Moore, while Moore was shocked at the scene and shed tears. Allen knew how Moore felt and told her that Akumas are living weapons with souls inside, they are controlled by its manufacturers, and they were victim of the world’s hatred of reality and anguish by sin. The soul that partakes into Mark’s body was a soul that was very important of him. Moore’s memory had a flash back in the past, it was 2 years ago….Mark and his Sister was about to get married when suddenly tragedy appears. Moore’s sister was dead when she tried to save Mark that was suppose to be hit by the heavy chandelier of the church. Not long after the incident, a manufacturer takes the advantage by convincing Mark that her wife; Crea will be alive if he will shout Crea’s name out loud. Crea’s soul was transported to the built body that was made by the manufacturer. Crea scolded Mark on why was she on an Akuma’s body. Even mark was surprised why Crea was mad at him. The manufacturer ordered Crea’s soul to kill Mark, Crea couldn’t control herself because she was already a part of an Akuma’s body.

The moment Moore realized it was her sister, she shouted her name out loud and the Akuma watched her. Moore was crying desperately. Allen then showed his arms real powers. He attacked the Akuma with one swift of his arms he whispered the words that her suffering will be over soon. The chain on the Akuma on Crea’s soul was broken and her soul became cleansed. She thanked Allen after that, and a spark of light was caught by Allen’s hand and suddenly disappears. All that was left behind was Allen and Moore that was sitting together besides the church walls. Timcanpy appeared and Allen made a bow to Moore goodbye.
Final Remarks:
Kawaii Allen ne? He’s even cuter in the anime than the manga. I haven’t quite read it yet, I only read 3 volumes of D. Gray Man. *runs off to buy more* Anyway, the anime looks promising. I think I will be able to review more of the episode series. Sorry for the late review though, I already finished reviewing Episodes 2-4 but my stupid computer ate the documents *whacks computer in the head* I hope it won’t end up like Ouran, the manga is still on going too. Did you also notice that Allen bow to Moore at the end? What I meant was that Allen wasn’t a Japanese but he was british in nature. Thoughts lately? And thank you for the readers on this blog, if you have complaints, feel free to say it!

This anime has turned out to be quite popular, though my favourites this season are Kanon, Death Note and Code Geass.
